Inspirational Designs for Inspirational Living

What is an Interior Designer and exactly why do I need one?

If you are thinking about remodeling or renovating your kitchen, bathroom, living room, family room or den or any space, large or small, in your home, condo or apartment. If you want to add a unique space in your home such as a solarium, bay window or add or replace a fireplace or convert some wasted space into an office then you may need an interior design consultant.

Just exactly what is an Interior Design Consultant or Contractor? Well you can think of an Interior Designer’s job as being similar to the work performed by a General Contractor whenever a house or commercial building is built. An Interior Designer is a person specifically trained to design, plan and co-ordinate the work required to create the finished living space within a home, office, condo or apartment block.

An Interior Designer uses his or her expertise to consult with a home owner or developer and produce an overall concept of the work required. With the concept firmly in mind, the Interior Designer will then measure, plan and draft a set of working drawings that will be used by trades people, such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, masons and the like. It is also the Interior Designer, who plans and co-ordinates construction work and ensures the final product meets the expectations of the home owner or project developer.

Any home owner thinking of remodeling their home and living withing the Vancouver, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, White Rock, Langley, Delta & Abbotsford areas of British Columbia or anywhere in the Lower Mainland needs to be aware that each of these districts have their own building code and regulations. It is part of an Interior  Designers responsibility to make sure any structural changes made to a home or building meet the proper codes and regulations.

Not only does a qualified Interior Designer plan and design the job, co-ordinate various trades people and ensure the work meets current standards and codes, they also must constantly upgrade their training to stay on top of new procedures and regulations, tools, appliances and construction materials in the industry. And if that wasn’t enough, to properly facilitate their occupation, Interior Designers must also know how to use the latest computer software and computer design tools.

While the costs associated with hiring a qualified Interior Designer can be quite high (depending on the amount of work required), their knowledge and expertise can help keep a home improvement job on track and on budget, ensure the final results meet a clients expectations and avoid costly overruns or mistakes. For from being a needless expense, a qualified Interior Designer can ensure the customer gets the happy results they expect and ultimately add substantive value to the property.
